LGBT Lit Recs: KIRAN OLIVER

Did I combine my love of book recs and my appreciation of LGBTQIA authors? Heck yes, I did. LGBT Lit Recs is a monthly series of guest posts where LGBT+ authors recommend their favourite queer books! There'll be a post every last Wednesday of each month.

This first week I'm thrilled to have Kiran Oliver, author of the super awesome f/f fantasy DAYBREAK RISING, on Words From Saruuh. Here's Kiran's recommended reads:

Firstly, a huge thank you to Saruuh for including me in this! Talking about the QUILTBAG books I love? Sounds like a plan.

OK. My favorite series of 2016 is hands-down no-questions-asked the Mangoverse by Shira Glassman. It’s actually edged out Mercedes Lackey’s Valdemar novels and Green Rider as some of my favorite books of all time. It’s seriously that good. I’d go so far as to put it above Harry Potter for me at this point in my life.

I’m not just being nice. Really. Not only is Shira a wonderful friend and all around human being, she writes some of the best F/F, trans guys, M/M, and...OK. Look, the Mangoverse series is wonderful. Queer Jewish bookworm queen meeting the adorable palace cook and falling in love? Check. Badass warrior that in no way needs people to rescue her/”break down her walls” but is still so freaking adorable when...OK, GO READ THE BOOKS. That’s a huge spoiler, so I’m just not going to tell you. Check on that. No damsel in distress/women-in-peril waiting for a strong man to rescue them tropes here.

I recently discovered I’m of Sephardic Jewish descent, and you’d better believe I plan on re-reading the Mangoverse series to really experience that part of the universe Shira has created. The latest book, The Olive Conspiracy has just released, and you can get a copy on Toquere’s website that includes some shorts which feature one of the most well-written trans men I’ve seen in 2016.

Shira writes with such detail you can crawl into the pages. Food, landscapes, love, it’s all there. You won’t regret checking this book and its corresponding series out.

Next up, I’d have to say The Mark of Noba and its corresponding series by G. L. Tomas. Both protagonists are actually canonically pansexual, which is amazing. I really, really enjoyed this novel. There’s an F/F debut on the way from Guinevere and Libertad as well, though it’s not a YA.

I enjoyed the characterization of Sterling, and of how Tetra interacted with the strange customs of Geo. There’s nothing I didn’t like about this book. It’s a long read, so be prepared for curling up on the couch with this one and a cup of tea. It’s seriously a really enjoyable series, and one I hope to see continue to explore sexuality and gender identity as its continues.

Bee Sriduangkaew’s Beneath Ceaseless Skies is a short story, but was still a very enjoyable read with an asexual protagonist. Something that I greatly appreciated as someone that’s gray ace and demi, myself.

In my TBR pile, I have a lot of wonderful QUILTBAG reads as well:

Kayla Bashe’s Screaming Down Splitsville is by all accounts fantastic and so is she. You won’t regret reading this one. It’s wonderful from what I (and many others) have heard.

The Chameleon Moon series by RoAnna Sylver is one I’ve had on my Kindle for a while, but I have yet to get to because of IRL being a bit hectic. That being said, it’s amazing from what I hear, and I would be remiss if I didn’t recommend it.

Viral Airwaves by Claudie Arseneault is another in my TBR stack I have heard is fantastic. Not an HEA though, just for warning!

There’s a lot more...Basically anything on the upcoming F/F of 2016 list Shira was kind enough to put together. I have 10 or 11 books I bought I have yet to get to.

Lastly, for a shameless plug, my own novel DAYBREAK RISING has an F/F romance at its core, with a variety of QUILTBAG characters as well. It’s coming out on Sept. 21, 2016 from Torquere Press, if you’d like to check it out.

If you like The Legend Mirror, try these books: Urban Fantasy edition.

If you like my YA UF series The Legend Mirror, you'll likely love these books! I've read and adored all of them, and I hope you do too. BONUS: They're all indie!!

DOG WITH A BONE, Hailey Edwards

There are not enough words in the world to explain how much I love this book, and Thierry, and Shaw. Their romance held me in this book but the world and the mystery is on point and I could not love anything in this book more. One of my all-time favourite series. Book 1 is $0.99 in Kindle!

BOUND BY PROPHECY, Melissa Wright

I fell so hard in love with Aern and devoured the whole trilogy in a couple days. Action-filled, tense, and romantic. AND FREE on Kindle!

DESCENDED FROM DRAGONS, Tricia Owens

The main character has a dragon familiar. DRAGON. FAMILIAR. Gone are the days of black cats (not that I don't love black cats, but DRAGON!!) Also there's a super cute gargoyle guy and threats of demons, the MC is Asian American, her best friend is Mexican, and it's set in Las Vegas. All good stuff.

STONE-COLD FOX, Hailey Edwards

Yes, this is the second Hailey Edwards book in this list but her books are SO GOOD. And I couldn't leave our Mai Hayashi, awesome Kitsune (fox-shifter) and all around kickass lady. Plus, this book has a tonne of POC and geek culture and COSPLAY. Heck yes!

Words & Wonders (61)

Welcome to Words & Wonders, a weekly journal of writing updates, links I've found useful or interesting, and book recommendations. I hope W&W will prove to be useful to you writers out there as well as offering an insight into my writing progress for my readers. Don't forget to leave a comment with your own writing progress!

In the Writing Cave, this week:

- I've edited 80 pages of The Powers of Callaire, and I am FINISHED. It's off with betas now and then it's ready for release. Just a few weeks' time, folks!!

- I second drafted 29 pages of my Johanna short, a Legend Mirror companion novella, and finished this round of edits. Next I'll add these changes to the manuscript, and then the story'll probably sit waiting for release. Since it takes place during the fifth Legend Mirror book, that could be a while... but there aren't too many spoilers to discourage me from an earlier release. We'll see!

- I wrote 1.5K of a Minnie short story, which will follow the Legend Mirror book four and preempt the events of book 5!

In my life:

- I've turned my attention to The Lux Guardians, and I'm rereading the first two books so I can write the final two. Plus doing essential research. Slowly, slowly getting there!

On the internet, this week I found useful:

- Been too busy to browse unfortunately!

A Book I've Loved Lately:

Lush, tense, and dangerous romance in the Russian court. It's free for kindle so make sure you get a copy!

In the Writing Cave, this week:

- I've edited 44 pages of The Powers of Callaire, plus wrote around 2K of rewrites. I announced the release date of this, in case you missed it. August 16th!

- I second drafted 28 pages of my Johanna short, a Legend Mirror companion novella. To say this is my side project, I'm pretty chuffed with my progress.

- I planned the next Legend Mirror book. It's gonna be different than the other four, that's for sure.

In my life:

- I'm getting super tired and ready to be done with POWERS.

On the internet, this week I found useful:

- Nada. I've not been on the internet so much this week.

A Book I've Loved Lately:

I think I love this even more than Wicked Lovely..? Is that possible? I didn't think so.

Announcement: The Powers of Callaire release date!

Hi guys! As hinted this weekend, I am officially revealing the release date of the next Legend Mirror book! POWERS will be out ...

August 16th 2016!

That's officially ONE MONTH away (well, and a day, but let's not get literal) so you'll be able to continue Yasmin's story very soon! The cover will be revealed close to the release date, and I'm planning a whole bunch of exciting things around that time so keep an eye out.

In POWERS you will find:

A Vow with a God
A sea Creature under a bridge
A desperate Incar
Chimera piggy back rides
Bonding and friendship
A locket that's also a compass
And a cavern full of bad things...

Here's the summary of the book:

Yasmin’s girlfriend is dead, but she will stop at nothing to bring Fray back. Even if that means going to the Otherland and making a bargain with the Ruler of All Souls. If Yasmin finds Pluto’s lost power, they’ll return Fray’s soul to her body.

Yasmin’s search takes her, and two of her friends, from Bucharest to France to Wales, and exposes a horrifying secret with Venus, Yasmin’s mother, at the heart of it. With a murderous, fiery god and the incarnation of death in her way, Yasmin will have to compromise her morals and harness the Legendary power in her veins. If she fails, Fray’s soul will be lost forever.

Words & Wonders (59)

Welcome to Words & Wonders, a weekly journal of writing updates, links I've found useful or interesting, and book recommendations. I hope W&W will prove to be useful to you writers out there as well as offering an insight into my writing progress for my readers. Don't forget to leave a comment with your own writing progress!

In the Writing Cave, this week:

- I've second drafted 111 pages of The Powers of Callaire and finished this stage! I moved onto big picture edits and a couple rewrites (40% edited, 1.5K rewritten so far) and when this is done, I'll be close to the finish line. I'll have an announcement about the release date VERY SOON.

- I started second drafting the TLM short I wrote the other week (6 pages edited). I'm gonna refer to it as the Johanna Short, named for the main character, who is named for Johanna Konta, my British tennis bae.

- I wrote another 2.5K random of the NA UF dragon story I'm definitely never gonna finish. For a few days I considered writing it for real but I have more important things (Lux Guardians, Legend Mirror) to turn my attention to. Maybe when TLG is wrapped up!!

In my life:

- Work, work, working

On the internet, this week I found useful:

- This interesting post on authors marketing/release strategies

A Book I've Loved Lately:

These books are hella awesome urban fantasy, with a tonne of new twists to the genre and swoony, complicated relationships. These books are sneaky - you won't see any of the shocks coming. And they're NA genre fic! Score!

Words & Wonders (58)

Welcome to Words & Wonders, a weekly journal of writing updates, links I've found useful or interesting, and book recommendations. I hope W&W will prove to be useful to you writers out there as well as offering an insight into my writing progress for my readers. Don't forget to leave a comment with your own writing progress!

In the Writing Cave, this week:

- I've second drafted 112 pages of The Powers of Callaire. Making awesome progress with this. I'll be done soon!

- I got hit by inspiration and ended up writing this short story about a daughter of Venus (not Yasmin) and an Incar (who you haven't met yet) and they're probably my favourite couple of all time. This story is NA, not YA, so there's some sexy times. I have a plan for it but no release date yet. This week, I've written 15,508. I had a day where I wrote an entire 8K. The largest output of words IN MY LIFE.

- I also wrote a random 2K of a NA urban fantasy dragon story I'm probably never gonna finish. Fun times!

In my life:

- Not an awful lot to report.

On the internet, this week I found useful:

- Didn't keep track of what I read this week. Sorry guys!

A Book I've Loved Lately:

OH MY GOD, let me tell you about these books. They're perfect urban fantasy with incredible female leads, and shifters, incubi, and fae. Holy mother of hell, I love them so much. They're indie and the first book in the Black Dog series is only £0.99 on Kindle and you need to go get it RIGHT NOW. I'm starting the final book today and I can't cope. I love everyone in this series so much!
